About this Tutorial

Impact mapping is a collaborative technique for building shared understanding and alignment between strategic business goals and tactical (or team-level) actions.

It has been most often used in agile projects to design better products, or at least to develop software products that better address business goals or customer needs. But the structure and process of impact mapping lend themselves well to another perennial challenge: more effective risk management, especially in complex environments that use iterative methodologies such as agile, where traditional risk management techniques are often overcome by events.

This experiential learning session provides an overview of impact mapping, especially in the context of agile risk management. Participants will - both individually and collaboratively - develop an impact map for a specific risk management scenario. The hands-on nature of this tutorial will ensure that everyone learns how to develop and use an impact map effectively.

This tutorial will be particularly suited for anyone responsible for risk management or quality management for any complex initiatives, including (but not limited to) software development projects.

Learning objectives:

  • describe how traditional risk management principles and values translate in lean agile
  • define an impact mapping framework and differentiate between the 4 components
  • explain how impact mapping helps identify and manage discovery and delivery risks
  • apply convergent and divergent thinking to develop an impact map
  • use an impact map to verify and validate assumptions for risk management
