About the session
Themes: Architecture | Autonomy | Scale
As organisations scale, the default reaction is often centralisation - architecture boards, approval gates, ivory tower architects. While this gives management a sense of control, it replaces one bottleneck with another, stifling the delivery flow it was meant to protect.
At DHL eCommerce Benelux, scaling to 35 independent teams, the team chose a different path: architecture for flow. They dismantled the gatekeeping model and moved toward distributed architectural thinking.
In this talk, Kenny and Marc share how the advice process replaced a central board with an advisory body, how collaborative modelling with C4 diagrams and user needs mapping built shared situational awareness, and the real friction of cultural change. This is a practical approach for architectural integrity that enables speed rather than impeding it.
Participant takeaways:
- a practical approach for maintaining architectural integrity that enables, rather than impedes, speed
- a transparent look at the friction of cultural change, the challenge of bringing management along, and how to replace "blind trust" with visible, living architectural records
- how to use tools like C4 diagrams and user needs mapping not as static documentation, but as a dynamic practice through collaborative modelling to build situational awareness and shared mental models
